Introduction: Bloemfontein, in the Free State province is acknowledged to be one of the most hospitable cities in South Africa, partly because, unlike Cape Town and Durban with their ocean-hugging advantage, it has to rely solely on its people and events to draw in the crowds. Compensating for being land-locked, Bloemfontein residents take great pride in their gardens, creating impressive sanctuaries of colour, water and soothing greenery. As Bloemfontein is called ' The City of Roses' the city fathers decided back in 1976 to launch a festival that would carry that message to a wild audience.

All Roads Lead to Bloemfontein

Both the judicial capital of South Africa and the capital of the Free State Province, Bloemfontein loes at the hub of 6 major routes that link the country in every direction. Named after a fountain where early travellers converged to refresh their animals before continuing into the interior, the city is blessed with sunny days and moderate weather.

During the festival, the culture of the indigenous BaSotho people can be experienced in open-air markets offering crafts such as trademark Sotho hats, blankets and carving work. BaSotho dancing and singing troupes add the required local colour and rhythm that festival-goers enjoy and expect in an African-based event.

Must See: Anglican Cathedral, Choet Visser Rugby Museum, First Raadsaal, The Fountain after which the city is named, Freshford House Museum, Lock Logan Waterfront, National Womens' Memorial, Naval Hill, Zoological Gardens, Twin-spired church.
