Introduction: Port Alfred is an interesting town in transition between beng a genuine fishing village and an up market holiday resort with a huge artificial island development. With its riverside setting, 1820 atmosphere and favorable climate, Port Alfred, is perhaps the most charming of the seaside resorts of the Eastern Cape Province. The town is sited on the banks of the beautiful Kowie River estuary.

Port Kowie dates from 1821, in which year the schooner Elizabeth crossed the bar and entered te river. In 1825 the place was renamed Port Francis after Francis Somerset, the wife of the frontier commandant, Colonel Somerset. In 1860 it was again renamed Port Alfred, second son of Queen Victoria.

 
Must See: Settlers church, Port Alfred hydro, Kowie heritage collection, Royal Albert Marina and harbour.
